Threading, weaving as a pedagogical method for non-hierarchical collective storytelling
Watch from 9.45 (scène from the film 'Polleke' based on a series of children's books)
Immediately had to think of this scène from one of my favorite childhood movies (and books) ‘Polleke’ while thinking about educational/pedagogical relationships. Power relations, setting examples, a code of conduct and the freedom to play with the ‘rules’.

Poor translation (sorry!)

Teacher:
Alright, dear boys and girls.
When you finish school you will find a profession. I became a teacher for example.
But you can also become something else, a general officer for example, to name something important. Today I want to know from all of you what you would like to become. Borri!
Borri: I want to become a general officer.
Teacher: Oké. Utman?
Utman: Me too, general officer.
Teacher: Naja?
Naja: General officer, sir.
Teacher: Mimoen?
Mimoen: General officer, sir.
Teacher: I think you misunderstood, look, you can choose something else.
That is allowed! Polleke?
Polleke: A poët, sir.

Friend: We agreed that everybody would name the same profession, right?
Polleke: I forgot.

Abstract to introduce the thematics of the film: Polleke is a young girl, who lives with her mother in a flat. She doesn’t see her father Spiek often since he lives on the streets and is a drug addict. She has a boyfriend Mimoen, but their difference in culture and religion make it very difficult to stay friends. To make it even more confusing, Polleke’s mother falls in love with her teacher, they even have plans to marry.

dOCUMENTA (13) KASSEL

Lopez has invited a Guatemalan sicario, a hired assassin, to come to Kassel to discuss and address the social and political circumstances in Central America and in armed conflicts everywhere. With this project, Lopez aims to 'penetrate the assassin's mind' as a subversive strategy of 'internalizing the reason and thinking behind the realities of people and ways of living'. The discussions between the artist and the assassin take place in the studio stage of Dock 4 during the opening week and are open to the public of dOCUMENTA.
A testimony in form of video and black and white photographs by Lopez is at view at the gallery.

And from America there comes a hummingbird
From China sinuous peehees
Who have only one wing and who fly in couples
And here's a dove immaculate spirit

The Five Obstructions

The former student (Lars von Trier) challenges his former teacher (Jorgen Leth) to remake 'The Perfect Human' five times, each time with a different obstruction/rule, set by Von Trier.

Rules in in creative processes - Rules as an expression of power
Whenever I happen to be in a city of any size, I marvel that riots do not break out every day: massacres, unspeakable carnage, a doomsday chaos. How can so many human beings coexist in a space so confined without destroying each other, without hating each other to death? As a matter of fact, they do hate each other, but they are not equal to their hatred. And it is this mediocrity, this impotence which saves society, which assures its continuance, its stability. Occasionally some shock occurs by which our instincts profit; but afterwards we go on looking each other in the face as if nothing had happened, cohabiting without too obviously tearing each other to shreds. Order is restored, a ferocious calm as dreadful, ultimately, as the frenzy which had interrupted it.
What are the ways that community practice can become a space to intentionally practice the futures we long for?

Assembling individuals to build relationships for the purposes of dreaming, healing and resistance.

Who can research?

Why is it that those to whom research can be so transformative are not part of these processes and are in fact actively excluded?

What are the ways that collective imagining can create alternative spaces for contesting power and advocating for new forms of social relation?

What role does art education play in social and political activity?

Take a breath for the day you have had so far.
And take a breath for this precious moment, which cannot be recreated.

Now, another for the day and night coming.

Here you are, in the cycle between the past and the future, choosing to spend your miraculous time in the exploration of how humans, especially those seeking to grow liberation and justice, can learn from the world around us how to best collaborate, how to shape change.

I am listening now with all of my senses, as if the whole whole universe might exist just to teach me more about love. I listen to strangers, I listen to random invitations, I listen to criticisms, I listen to my body, I listen to my creativity and to artists who inspire me. I listen to elders, I listen to my dreams and the books I am reading. I notice that the more I pay attention, the more I see order, clear messages, patterns, and invitations in the small and seemingly random things that happen in my life.

In all these ways I meditate on love.

In 1968 Ian Wilson made his final sculpture.

Since then, he has explored the idea of oral communication as an art form.
